About Power Racks

The Power Rack is also known as a Power Cage, Squat Cage or Squat Rack.
Not to be confused with a half cage or half rack. It is a four-pillar rectangular box that functions as a substitute to a human spotter for free weight barbell exercises, seated, standing or lying down that include: Bench Press, Squats, Overhead Press, Rack Lockout, Rack Pull, Barbell Shrug, Inverted row, Barbell Bent over Row, Barbell curls. Beside the four pillars that come predrilled or punched with adjustment holes, the rack will generally include a pair of barbell lift-offs and a pair of safeties. The lift offs are placed at a height appropriate for the exercise with the safeties placed in a predetermined position to let the user escape the weights and bar should they fatigue or fail to complete the movement of the exercise. Most modern power racks come equipped with a chinning/pull-up bar.

Some power cages squat racks and squat stands are capable of being anchored to the floor for extra stability. Many of these are found in multi-use commercial facilities and are mounted per manufacturer specification, usually by a professional installer. Floor mounting can be done at home in your basement or in your garage gym. Bolting a power rack or power cage to the floor gives the user an extra boost of confidence especially while using very heavy weight during standing over head lifts or squats. It also allows user a stable platform for suspension trainers that are commonly used in functional training activities. Though most racks are not anchored to the ground, users can add plate horns and store weights low on the frame to add extra stability and support.

Many modern Power Racks can be expanded with attachments like a lat station with high low pulley, weight storage pegs, plyo platforms, strength band pegs, t-bar row, landmine attachments, dip attachments, bar holder, etc. to create your personal garage gym, workout room or box to do the work out of the day, cross train or do functional workouts or just straight up power lift.

The great news is power racks, squat racks and cages are versatile, adaptable, expandable, affordable, durable, safe and are a great start to any commercial gym, box, home gym, garage gym with any budget.

Nice Rack - Hiker
Rate: 5 out of 5
This is a nice rack for us non-supermen that aren't moving stacks of 45's every day. I would have no fear putting 300 to 500 pounds on it, but if I were lifting much more than that, I'd probably shop for a stronger rack (maybe one day). Anyway, since there aren't really any instructions (just an exploded drawing) I'll offer my suggestions on assembly.

The way I assembled it was to put the bottom 3 pieces together first (put the feet and plastic parts on now), then add the rear uprights, then the top back piece, then a front upright and top side piece, repeat for other side, then chin bar. Snug the bolts at first, then tighten them all when it's all assembled. Get them good and tight but don't over tighten because the tubing will start to bend in with a lot of force. You'll need two 3/4" wrenches (a socket wrench and spanner work best). This worked well for me doing it by myself and took about 45 minutes including opening the boxes and laying out the parts.

This rack comes in 3 boxes and can be shipped via a regular carrier. This might be nice to know for those who don't live where a freight carrier can easily get to you. Anyway, this rack, a bench, and a 300 pound set can take you a long way. Add some dumbbells and you'll have a nice little home gym.

Sturdy, safe, lots of exercises, easy to assemble. Great buy - Edward Brown "Ed"

This cage is capable of handling serious work-outs. I'd feel comfortable using 300lbs of weight on it. I'm 6'1 and the proportions of the cage fit me just fine. It's sturdy & has a relatively small footprint. The best part of using a cage is that you can self-spot and, therefore, push yourself w/ less risk of injury.

If you add a 300lb weight set (Weider's rubber-coated is an incredible buy and will not rust), an adjustable bench (FID46 is good choice - sturdy & comes w/ leg extension, incline, decline) & dumbbells (adjustable take up less space, but Weider's rubber-coated plates can be used as makeshift dumbbells), you will have a very functional gym that goes beyond general fitness.

I looked at a couple of other cages, and BodySolid's Powerline is the best buy.

ASSEMBLY The unit arrives in three large boxes. It's heavy (which is good) and surprisingly easy to assemble. All parts were included with my shipment and all parts fit as they should.

EXERCISES (after adding weights & a bench) Everything you need to get in shape and build all parts of your body with the safety of self-spotting

CONS No major complaint. The 2 lift-offs and 2 safety rods are painted. When slid through the cage holes, paint peels from them every time. Not a big deal, but they should've been left unpainted.

EXTRAS 10-year warranty, chin-up bar

The lat tower is an option, but I find chin-ups much more effective at building back muscle & symmetry. Plus I save money and space.

I'm 210lbs and this unit is able to support substantial weight on the lift-offs while I perform chin-ups. Though not professional-grade for power lifters who use over 400lbs, if you're still wondering if it's stable or sturdy enough for you to lift heavy weights, the answer is absolutely. I'm pleased with my purchase.

this was a really great buy for the price, holds a good amount of weight, I was scared doing "unassisted" squats with heavy weight (I'm 5'2" 115lbs) but it works wonderful, great buy

Very nice rack for the price - Brian Hill
Rate: 4 out of 5
The good:
- Heavy and very sturdy, no worries about it holding lots of weight
- Well built, welds are good, paint is good looking
- Lots of available accessories, includes a chin up bar
- Price is awesome!
- Nice quality pins to hold bar support and safety bars

The bad:
- The safety bars are painted, which means that every time your bar hits it or you adjust them, you lose paint. They include touch-up paint, but that's a losing battle. Chromed safety bars would have been MUCH better. Rubber grommets, at the very least, would have been nice.
- NO INSTRUCTIONS and NO TOOLS PROVIDED. You will need a tool set, preferably with a good socket set, and an extra pair of hands helps a lot.
- It's about half the depth of most cages I've used. Not as big a deal as it seems at first, actually good in some ways, but worth mentioning.
- The holes in the cage are NOT marked in any way, which makes lining up the safety bars a pain sometimes. Tape and a sharpy or a good label maker are needed to fix that.
- Because it's a little less deep than normal, forcefully placing a loaded bar on the holders can shake and move the rack a bit if it is not bolted down or somehow counter-weighted (like with a rack-mounted plate holder).
- Shipped by a trucking company, and was a day late (par for the course with freight companies in my experience)

I've seen an older version of this rack with 1000+ pounds on the bar for Squat and DL lockouts. This rack is tougher than you might think.

This power rack is absolutely amazing for the price. The build is secure, the size is more than adequate, and best of all it's easy to adjust with the many settings it allows. I'm a 6ft 4 260lb D1 athlete and this rack fulfills all my needs. However I will mention that the instructions are hard to figure out (there are 4 different types of screws so make sure you figure out which lengths go where), and the knurling on the pull-up bar is a little light (some people like it this way). But these things cannot reduce the high quality of this rack at such a low price.

Note: It has a 600lb capacity so it's more than adequate for most's needs.

Needed a powerack...sorry, WANTED a powerack did some searching everywhere and I mean everywhere. Nothing negative about it and it is exactly what I wanted, easy to assemble with two people. But I could see a challenge building it yourself!

I was looking for a weight rack to start my home gym. I had the plates and barbells but needed a rack to go with it. For the money this is a great rack. It's sturdy and gets the job done. I can bench (incline and normal), powerclean and squat in this rack very easily. I think this is a great rack for the money since racks that are similar to this and considered better quality can cost you $1,000 - $1,500. Definitely recommend.

The cage came in three well pack boxes. It was very easy to put together took about an hour or less. It is an awesome addition to my gym. No more spotters needed for many excerises. I am very satisfied with it and would recommend it as a must for any gym.

Need Muscle? Then this rack may be for you! - Robin M. Smith "Helping People Is My Life"
Rate: 5 out of 5
This is a sturdy rack, easy to assemble. No parts missing! My only minor complaint was that if you assmble as directed, you will insert some bolts without washers. Now, MAYBE you don't NEED the "extra" washers, but I have found that washers protect surfaces. Not just for looks, but for integrity of the product, I went and bought 20 additional washers (.20 a piece at the hardware store) and I am certain that this was a smart move, plus the rack just looks more uniform with washers beneath each bolt. All the parts fit --but there was a distressing moment when it appeared the back cross section was NOT GOING TO FIT! YIKES! But I quickly determined that this was part of the structural design because one assembled the "offset" draws the rack into a tight, sturdy unit. This unit allows HEAVIER than normal lifts to be done SAFELY. Want to determine your MAX lift on Bench Press, Squat, or other exercise but have no spotter? This baby will spot you and spot you well! Also, you can do "partials" by setting the safety pins at different positions. Heavier weights means more strength, power and muscle! YEAH!! Great product for beginners or pros. I didn't get the Lat attachment but I will add that soon.

Awesome rack for the money - R. Hayward
Rate: 5 out of 5
For the price, I don't think you can beat this rack. I lift in my basement which has pretty low ceilings. The rack fits perfectly. It feels very sturdy and can be upgraded with a lat/row tower. My only complaint is the same as the others: the painted liftoffs and support rails. Otherwise this one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Great Rack for the $$$ - Cman
Rate: 5 out of 5
I want to start off by saying, if your a behemoth this rack is not for you! I don't really know anyone lifting over 600 lbs., which is the max weight this unit can handle. Like the title says, it is a nice piece for the price! If your looking for a total body workout, get the lat, too. Ask for Dave, if your going to the Aurora store... he will hook you up! Sidenote: Careful on how tight you turn the screws, as this is 12g. stell and can be bent! If you see paint ribbons, its a goof idea to stop.

Excellent Value
Rate: 5 out of 5
For the money it is hard to beat. Easy to assemble, it took me about 2 hours, I laid everything out beforehand and took my time (19 mm metric or 3/4 standard socket and wrench works). Just torque down on it so that it’s snug. Some thread locker and rechecking it every few days should be good. Compact, so it made good use of my limited work space. I’m 5,11 and I need hold my feet forward or curl behind my legs to do pull ups or chin ups. I put some 45 and 35 # plates on the opposite base leg to keep it stable. I opted for the dip bar and I’m glad I did. Because it is angled I can vary my grips plus it is very stable on the rack. The paint does scrape off easily which, like others here mentioned, is annoying as I’m always brushing paint and chalk off my barbell. Overall I’m happy that I bought this rack.
